How to set up a virtual PC on Windows 7 x64 for Caddie versions older than V16

1. Get the Windows 7 64 BIT update from Microsoft.  Download and install it. (Please not that according to Microsoft, the "Windows Virtual PC" is only supported on Windows 7 Ultimate and Professional)

2. After you have installed the update from Microsoft, you will be able to acces under the Program List

You can click on "Start | All Programs | Windows Virtual PC".



3. After you opened the Virtual PC application, click on "Create virtual Machine" on the top of your window which will be just underneath your Main menu.  Please take note that for this exercise in this article you will need a Windows XP installation disc with a valid license code.



4. On the "Create a virtual machine" window, type a name for you Windows XP installation and choose a location for where your Virtual machine file will be stored. Make sure your XP installation disc is inserted.


5. If it prompts you with a question that the folder doesn't exist and if you want to create it, click on "yes".


6. In this next step, you can allocate the amount of RAM that the Virtual machine will use. This is part of the current RAM (Memory) that your computer is using, so bare in mind that you cannot allocate too much, otherwise there won't be enough memory left for your current Windows 7. If you have 4GB memory installed, I would suggest to allocate 2GB (2048MB) for the XP virtual machine. Then also leave the "Use computer network connections" box ticked if you are on a network, and then you can utilize that network settings to browse to file etc.; Then click on "Next".


7. On this next window, the default setting will be on "Create a dynamically expanding virtual hard disk". This option will use the current hard drive that you choose and install the virtual disk there, and it will us as much space as required, and it will grow (use more space on the drive) when you install more appications on the Virtual Windows XP. In this option you can give your machine its desired name, and also choose where it will be installed (where it will use the hard drive space). After you have done that, click on "Create".


8. In a short while, this will now have created a "Virtual disk" with a .vmcx extension.


9. Right Click on that Virtual machine, and click on "Open".


10. You will see an indication that the Virtual Machine is starting up.


11. The next screen will show a DOS-based screen that will show the files being copied for the Windows installation.


12. In the next screen of the setup, press "Enter" on they keyboard as indicated on the screen.


13. On the next screen, press "F8" on the keyboard.


14. In the next setup screen, you will now see the drive that you selected to install the Virtual machine on, with the amount of free space on it. Select the desired drive and press "Enter" on the keyboard.


15. The next step, select the first option "Format the partition using the NTFS file system (Quick)and press "Enter" on the keyboard.


16. In the next window it will show that it is formatting and following that, it will show the files being copied.


17. After the files are copied successfully, the computer will show that it is going to reboot. Keep in mind it is not the actual computer rebooting, but just the "Virtual Machine"


18. The virtual machine will then boot as it will in a normal computer with windows XP on.


19. After it booted up, the setup will start again, and you will get a window asking for your input as soon as you click inside the window, another window will pop-up explaining that your mouse pointer will be captured inside the Virtual machine, and to "release" it again (meaning that you can use your mouse outside the virtual machine), you have to press Ctrl+Alt+Left Arrow together on the keyboard. As showing in the picture below, point number 1 is to click on the "Customize" button.


20. Click on the arrow next to English (United states), and change it to English (South Africa) or to the country that you are situated in. This is for the currency settings.


21. Then choose your country/location, and then click "OK".


22. On the "Regional and Language options" step, click on "Next".


23. On the "Personalize your Software" step, type in a desired Name and organization details, and then click on "Next".


24. On the "Your Product Key", enter the product licence key that you have for your XP installation,and then press "Next".


25. In the "Computer name and Administrator password" step, type in the name that you would want for the Virtual PC, leave the Administrator password blank, and click on "Next".


26. On the "Date and Time Settings" step, make sure your settings are correct, and click on "Next".


27. On the "Networking Settings" step, select the "Typical Settings" option, and click on "Next".


28. On the "Workgroup and Computer Domain" step, select the first option as indicated in the picture below, and then click "Next".


29. Windows setup will go through the necessary steps and eventually restart again, and when Windows starts up again, it will give you a "Display Settings" message, just click on "OK".


30. It will then display another message for the "Monitor Settings", click on "OK".


31. On the Welcome screen of Windows, click on "Next".


32. On the "Help Protect your PC" step, select the "Not right now" option, and then click "Next".


33. When checking for internet connectivity, you can click on "Skip".


34. On the "Ready to Activate Windows?" step, select the "No, remind me in a few days" option, and click on "Next".


35. On the "Who will use this computer" step, type in your name, and click on "Next".


36. The last step, the only option is to click on "Finish".


37. After that last step, Windows will show the desktop of Windows XP, and as far as installation is concerned, you are now finished.


38. OK, so now the Windows XP is installed. To enable us to work with this Virtual Machine successfully, we must first check if we have installed Windows XP Service pack 3. To do that, click on "Start", then "Right Click" on "My Computer", and then click on "Properties".


39. A "System Properties" window will appear, and you will see at the top of that page what Service-Pack is currently installed. If yours is Service Pack 3, then you are fine to continue to step 41. If it says Service Pack 2, then you need to download service pack 3 from the Microsoft website.

Download and install the service pack, this can take while.


40. After you have installed the service pack 3, go to the steps again and click on "Start", right click on "My Computer" and go to "Properties". It should then display "Service Pack 3". If this is correct, then we can continue to step 41.


41. Once Service Pack 3 is installed, you can click on "Tools" at the top of the Virtual Machine, and then click on "Install Integration Components". This is basically software that enables you to connect and use your Audio, Clipboard (for copy), Printers, Hard drives on the Windows 7 PC.


42. You will then get a message to install the integration components, click on "Continue".


43. The Windows Installer will start, give it some time to extract all the installation files, and it will start the "Virtual Integration Components" installer, click on "Next".


44. The installer will go through the necessary steps to complete and you will be prompted with a "Setup Completed" window. On this window, "untick" the "Download updates..." (Step 1), and then click on "Finish".


45. You will then be asked to restart the Virtual PC, click on "Yes".


46. After you rebooted the Virtual PC, and you still have the Windows XP disc in the computer, it might open the Setup for Windows XP (Because of the Integration Components now picking up the DVD drive from your physical computer in the Virtual PC). Just click on "Exit".


47. Now you can Install Caddie like you would normally do, but it the installation, do NOT install the HASP driver from Caddie. "Untick" the option and continue with the installation.


48. Now, Caddie needs a later version of the HASP driver than is provided on the Caddie disc, hence we didn't install it. If you have a newer Caddie disc like a Caddie 16 DVD, you can install it from there which will be shown in the next step. If you do not have a disc, please download the 

HASP Driver for Pre-Caddie 16 . 

Download it and follow the next step to install.

49. If you have a Caddie 16 Disc, browse to the disc. "Right Click" on the Start button, and click on "Explore". This step is the same for if you downloaded the driver.



50. As the image show here at the bottom, on the left pane, click on the Caddie 16 DVD (1) and browse to the "Pre-Caddie 16 Hasp Drivers" (3) folder which is situated in the "Drivers" (2) folder on the root of the disc. Double-click on the HDD32.exe file(4) to install the HASP driver.


51. When the HASP window appears, click on "U.S. English", and click on OK.


52. On the next step where it displays "Welcome", click on "Next".


53. On the "End User License Agreement" step, click on "I accept the license agreement", and click "Install".


54. When it says HASP Drivers installed successfully, click on "Finish".


55. After that step, insert your USB dongle. You will see a tab at the top that shows "USB". If you click on that, you will see that it shows a HASP HL x.xx and next to it "Attach". Keep in mind that if you have another version of Caddie because the dongle will not be usable there for as long as you use it on the Virtual machine.



56. Windows will detect the new hardware and will install the drivers for it.  This means that you will use the dongle on the Virtual machine. It will show at the bottom right corner what it is doing,and when it is complete it will say "Hardware is installed successfully and ready for use".



57. When that is done, click on "Start | All Programs | Caddie 9.1 | Caddie Info".


58. This will return the info of the dongle. Make sure it gives a HASP driver version of and that it also gives the correct dongle number.


59. If this is correct, click on "Exit".

60. Next we need to check whether the screen settings are correct. To do that, "Right Click" on your desktop background, and then click on "Properties".


61. On the "Settings" tab (1), make sure that you have the correct screen resolution, but more importantly, make sure it is set to "Highest (32 bit)" color quality (2). Then click on OK.(This is just to ensure that your buttons display correctly within Caddie).


62. Once this is all done, you have an option to make your Virtual PC use the full screen, you can do that by clicking on the "Action" tab (1) on top and then "View Full Screen" (2).


63. Now you can open Caddie from from your Desktop shortcut. The only thing you will need to make sure now is that is recognizes the license you are using (2).


64.And that is basically it! Now you can use Caddie as you always have.; If you want to use the dongle back into the other Windows 7, you can close Caddie and click on "USB" on top (1),and click on the HASP HL x.xx (release) (2).


65. If you want to shut down the Virtual PC, you can do that by normally "Shutting down". Click "Start | Shut Down". This should answer all your questions regarding how to get Caddie versions older than V16 working on a Virtual PC application from Microsoft.

Having been a KUHLMANN drawing board user in the 80’s I felt safe in the sense that I wouldn't have to adjust to the new technology “Computers”. Then I was introduced to the DOS version of CADDIE. We upgraded to CADDIE 5 Professional and used the programme until the hard drive of the computer gave up and I was forced to upgrade. We installed CADDIE 9, 12 &15. I was familiar with the CADDIE 9 and did not want to adjust to use the “NEW CADDIE”.


How wrong can one be?  Ever since I started experiencing the latest version of CADDIE it is an absolute pleasure. If I get stuck, help is just a phone call away.
